GVC Holdings, the global sports betting and gaming entertainment group to be renamed Entain, has engaged a world-leading academic specialising in online addiction to advise on further enhancing player protection.

Dr Mark Griffiths, Distinguished Professor of Behavioural Addiction and Psychology at Nottingham Trent University, joins GVC this month with the same title.

He will be auditing GVC’s policies and processes on responsible gaming and suggest improvements, drawing on academic and scientific experience gained over more than 30 years studying online behaviours and addiction.

Dr Griffiths was also part of the World Health Organisation working party that formally recognised “gaming disorder” as a psychological condition last year.

Last week, GVC’s CEO Shay Segev set out his direction for the group, focusing on two strategic pillars of sustainability and growth, underpinned by the group’s industry-leading proprietary technology. This included a commitment, under the new Sustainability Charter, to continue to lead the industry on responsible gambling.

“I’m delighted to be joining GVC at this time because it gives me an unprecedented opportunity to help deliver innovative technological advances supported by evidential scientific research to improve player protection,” Dr Griffiths said.
