The Supreme Court of the US has announced today that is has granted the petition submitted by New Jersey in the state's ongoing battle to see sports betting legalised. This means the state's appeal will go to the highest court in the US.

US Supreme Court quiet on NJ betting

After Monday's delay, which could have meant a wait of many months before a ruling was handed down, the Supreme Court has now granted the Garden State its day in court.

The grant of an appeal by the Supreme Court means that documents will be filed and arguments heard by the court’s nine justices.

To prevail, New Jersey will have to convince five of the nine of its arguments to see sports betting permitted at a number of venues across the state.

A date for the hearing has not been set
