New figures released by UK online casino Roxy Palace show more women than ever are placing bets on their PCs and also reveals that they are willing to risk more of their cash than men.

The statistics show a 20 per cent increase in the number of women betting during the past year.

Women were more confident gamblers than their husbands and boyfriends – betting almost one fifth (18 per cent) more money than male players on the site.

Female gamblers were also revealed to be far more loyal to the site than their male counterparts – women were 21 per cent more likely to return for multiple visits, which may be one of the main reasons behind the higher average wager.

A spokesman from Roxy Palace, which has more than 100,000 UK members, said he believes a combination of a rise in the variety of games on offer and the added comfort afforded by playing online, were two of the main reasons behind the growing number of female players.

He said: “Historically gambling has always had a male heavy image, especially in brick and mortar casinos. However, over the past few years we’ve noticed a surge in the number of women playing games on our site.

“There are more games on offer than ever before and it’s probable that this variety has led to a wider demographic of gamers logging on for a flutter than would’ve been the case a few years ago. “I think for many gamers, particularly female players – the thought of walking into a casino can seem a little daunting, but by playing online in the comfort of their own home they’re able to enjoy the same excitement without any of the associated hassle.” He concluded: “The fact that women were shown to wager higher amounts than men was particularly interesting as many people would expect testosterone fuelled males to place larger bets. It’s possible that this is due to women choosing to gamble solely on one site whilst men often prefer to spread their gaming across a range of online providers.”
