188Bet has confirmed that it will be relocating a number of its customer-facing roles to Asia but says it remains committed to the Isle of Man.

Reports surfaced over the weekend that staff at the Douglas-based online casino and betting business had been told to expect redundancies. Having revealed that it was undertaking a "strategic review", 188Bet said on Monday that in order to grow the business it needed to be closer to its customers, the majority of which are in the Far East.

"As a result, the company will reposition a number of customer facing type roles to the company’s operation in the Far East but 188Bet remains committed to the Isle of Man, where it will continue to be headquartered," it said.

The Isle of Man’s Minister for Economic Development, Allan Bell, said the government would be working with 188Bet’s owner, Cube, to ensure it has a long-term presence on the island.

"With strong growth in the sector and over 700 people now employed, we hope that any staff affected will be quickly absorbed by other businesses. We understand that Cube remains licensed here and that it is committed to growing its business," he said.
