Over the year to June 2008, 8.8 per cent of British adults participated in at least one form of remote gambling, according to the latest survey released by the UK Gambling Commission.

The study, which focuses on gaming through a computer, mobile phone or interactive television, takes an average from 8,000 adult surveys conducted every quarter from September 2007 to June 2008.

The 8.8 per cent prevalence rate is the same as the 2007 calendar year figure, and compares with the 2006 calendar year figure of 7.2 per cent.

Some 90.9 per cent of respondents said they had not participated in any form of remote gambling during the 2007-2008 period. The remainder refused to answer or answered ‘don’t know’.

Those participating in remote gambling remain more likely to be male than female, and are more likely to be aged 18-44, and if those only playing National Lottery games remotely are excluded, five per cent of respondents participated in remote gambling.

Respondents aged over 55 remain least likely to have participated.
