Online gaming is now forging way ahead of the land-based casino industry in Germany, according to research published by the IFO Institute at Munich University.

Germany

Data released by the organisation shows that in 2012, €658m was gambled on the internet in Germany, compared with €538m in the country’s 100 casinos. In a period of only seven years, between 2005 and 2012, the two forms of gambling went a long way to reversing their performances.

In 2005, online gambling was responsible for €197m in revenues, while casinos enjoyed nearly €1bn. Gradually the two came together until, in mid-2009 they crossed as land-based casino revenues continued to spiral downwards and online gaming turnover increased.
