The chairman of the Dutch Gambling Authority has admitted that the future regulatory landscape in the online market is “unclear” after last week’s voted-for gambling motions.
Kansspelautoriteit chairman René Jansen said the 10 motions voted for by a majority of the House of Representatives last Tuesday “could have far-reaching consequences for the regulation of the online gambling market.”
They included calls for a ban on some “high-risk” online casino products and a blanket ban on online gambling advertising – going further than the current restrictions.
Jansen, speaking at the Casino Operations Summit in Amsterdam, said market stakeholders will “have to wait and see” what the response is from the Dutch government minister for Legal Protection Franc Weerwind.
Weerwind has the responsibility of either rejecting the motions or approving them to become law. However, Jansen noted that Weerwind has previously “advised against.”
Jensen also spoke about the Dutch regulator’s compliance efforts in the country’s land-based industry, particularly arcades and gaming halls.
