Cherry has paid £5.4m to take up a majority shareholding in virtual sports specialist Highlight Games, ahead of its launch into the lucrative Italian market.

The total shares purchased by the Stockholm-listed igaming group amounts tp 60.4 per cent and the company has been consolidated into Cherry in the game development business area.

Highlight Games offers a patented product and holds multi-year rights to use footage from inter alia historical football matches to create virtual sports content.

The company has started to deploy its Soccerbet game into several countries in Africa and in the coming months, will launch in Italy with Eurobet as part of a planned strategy to include a number of operators in a country where the virtual sports market is worth €2bn.
