Belgium's proposed online gaming legislation that was announced earlier this year still requires further development, it has been claimed.

Speaking to iNTERGAMINGi, Domi De Wilde, secretary of the Belgian Casino Federation, said: "Further bylaws and decrees regulating the practical implementation still need to be established."

The new legislation is intended to grant online gaming licences to operators that currently have land-based licences, banning all illegal and offshore betting sites. Consequently, it has been challenged by both the Remote Gambling Association and the European Gaming and Betting Association over concerns that it contravenes European law.

According to De Wilde, however, there may be further developments once a new government is elected in Belgium and the country assumes the presidency of the EU later this year. "As far as the political situation is concerned, a new government is being formed in Belgium," he continued. "This implies that all further legal initiatives have been put on hold until the new government has been installed.

"During the second half of the year, Belgium will hold the presidency of the EU. As a result of this, some regulatory initiatives on gaming might be expected."
