Vermont governor Phil Scott said legal online sports betting will provide “important resources and consumer protections” after the US state signed a bill into law.

As reported by the Associated Press, the Vermont Department of Liquor and Lottery will issue contracts with between two and six operators.
The operators will be required, the Associated Press adds, to annually provide a responsible gaming plan including resources being made available to players.
The Department of Mental Health will also liaise with the Department of Liquor and Lottery on an annual report on how sports betting is contributing to problem gambling in the state.
Scott said: “I first proposed Vermont legalize sports betting several years ago and I’m happy the Legislature has come to an agreement, as well.
“We know many Vermonters already participate in the marketplace and bringing it above board provides important resources and consumer protections.”
North Carolina also legalised sports betting this week, with the two additions further bolstering the presence of sports betting in the US since PASPA was repealed in 2018.
