The UK government has this week released a consultation on the introduction of new licence requirements for overseas online gambling firms.

The moves follows protests about offshore companies accessing the UK market with a lower tax position, and saw William Hill and Ladbrokes recently move their online gambling divisions offshore.

A 12-week consultation period has begun, meaning that online operators currently licensed outside the UK will have to apply for a licence from the Gambling Commission.

The consultation period will end June 18 but it is believed that the government’s final decision will be to introduce the proposed UK licence requirement.
