The Swedish government has also tasked Spelinspektionen with developing a method for calculating the channelisation rate in the Swedish market.

There has been increased debate about the size and worth of the illegal market in Sweden since plans to increase the industry tax rate from 18 per cent to 22 per cent were revealed.

The government wants Spelinspektionen to report on the size of the illegal market by no later than October 1 next year.

It also wants the regulator to map the factors behind the increase in young people’s gambling and how such activities are financed.

Swedish minister of financial markets Niklas Wykman said: “The government has given the Swedish Gambling Authority better conditions to sharpen supervision and develop work against unlicensed gambling and match-fixing. It is important to maintain strong consumer protection in the gambling area and to combat criminal activity.”

Spelinspektionen director general Camilla Rosenberg added: “We look positively at and welcome the assignments we receive for 2024. Young people's gambling, developed calculation method for the degree of channelization and the assignment we previously received, about a review of the use of gambling accounts, are all important issues for the Swedish gambling market.

“This, together with increased resources to counter unlicensed gambling and match-fixing, strengthens us in our work from day one of the new year. Our work for a safer and more secure gaming market for consumers continues.”
