Greentube, the Austrian software developer, has announced that almost one million football enthusiasts have downloaded the company's Football Challenge 08 skill game, which was launched in April this year ahead of the 2008 UEFA European Football Championship.

Football Challenge 08 is now among the world’s largest virtual football games. The free-to-download product allows players to create their own teams and play in virtual tournaments against opponents around the world.

Greentube has partnered with eight European media enterprises - ORF (Austria), SF (Switzerland), Sport1 (Germany), Inform Media (Hungary), Zurnal24 (Slovenia), 24sata (Croatia) and Inform Media (Romania) - all of which have integrated the game into their websites.

Football Challenge 08 is fully financed by several heavyweight in-game advertisers, including T-Mobile, Samsung, Nokia, McDonald’s Corporation, The Coca Cola Company, Sony Ericsson and Adidas.

Greentube said the game is on its way to reaching the record figures generated by the company’s flagship sports product, Ski Challenge, which was recently voted most popular sports game at the Austrian Gamers Choice Awards.

"The challenge for us is combining a quality gaming concept with simple handling," said Greentube CEO, Eberhard Dürrschmid. "Our experience with games such as the development of Ski Challenge will help us and our partners appeal to large segments of users."
