The European Gaming and Betting Association believes new digital identity regulations will benefit players and gambling operators across the continent.

Identity verification

The European Parliament last Thursday approved a regulation introducing a new European Digital Identity to enable citizens to identify and authenticate their identity online.

The regulation, which is expected to be adopted before the summer after being sent to the EU Council of Ministers for approval, will apply across all EU member states.

EGBA secretary general Maarten Haijer said the e-ID will create a “more seamless and trustworthy” experience for online players while helping to “reduce costs and administration” for operators.

The EGBA said the “transformative tool” will address “several concerns in the digital sphere.”

“Using such a standardised, non-commercial identification method will ensure greater privacy protection for consumers, among other benefits,” it added.

“Additionally, the e-ID enhances security by offering consumers and businesses a trusted and standardised tool for online identification, minimising the risk of identity theft and fraud.”
