The state of Delaware has become the first in the US to approve the legalisation of full-service websites offering slots and other casino games.

Governor Jack Markell signed a new law that will enable the state’s casinos to offer casino games online in a system controlled by the Lottery Office.

This is intended to offer local casinos a new opportunity to compete with operators in neighbouring states, USA Today reports.

"We're talking about a couple of thousand jobs," Markell said. "The competitive landscape for this industry has changed dramatically." The state is planning to launch online gambling in 2013.
