As expected, California Attorney General Rob Bonta issued an opinion that daily fantasy sports games are prohibited under California state law.

The 33-page opinion said DFS violates laws as it involves betting on sports. It also points to pick’em and draft-style games as illegal.

Underdog Fantasy had filed a lawsuit attempting to block Bonta from releasing his opinion, which was ultimately rejected by a Sacramento Superior Court which claimed Underdog had 18 months to file against the opinion, disqualifying its emergency lawsuit, on top of the fact that the opinion does not change current laws.

Underdog has argued its DFS games are skill-based, not games of chance.

Tribal groups previously requested a review of daily fantasy sports legality, as online sports betting is not permitted in the state.
