Alistair Darling's announcement for the results of 2009's budget on Wednesday revealed that there would be no increase to gross profit tax.

Commenting on the Budget 2009, chief executive officer of Global Betting and Gaming Consultants Warwick Bartlett said: "Alistair Darling’s decision not to increase the rate of gross profit tax in Wednesday’s budget is an acknowledgement that the UK betting industry cannot be taxed further because of the existence of offshore, tax-free jurisdictions.

"Any further tax increase would have tipped the balance towards a deduction from the punters’ payout and the customer would simply have sought the offshore alternative, which would have led to job losses and lower tax revenues in the UK.

"The chancellor’s decision is great news for the UK punter who continues to receive the best betting value in the world."
