Betsson has applied for a gaming licence in Sweden, after the re-regulated market opened up the application process today.

Subsidiaries of the Betsson Group – which has been offering entertainment to Swedish customers since 1963 – can now apply to conduct online gaming in the country, which the company says “on the long term is positive for customers, operators and shareholders”.
Sweden’s new gaming laws come into effect on January 1, 2019.
Pontus Lindwal, Betsson’s CEO, said: “It is good that Sweden has decided to open up the gaming market for free competition in a controlled environment. That today we can submit a licence application is a milestone for both Betsson and the gaming industry. We look forward to being able to operate in our home market as a recognised operator.”
Betsson already holds licences in 11 jurisdictions and last month, reported growth in the first half of 2018, boosted by the impact of the World Cup.
