The company will now be able to offer its sportsbook and certain casino products, such as roulette and blackjack, to the country’s newly regulated i-gaming market.

Under the terms of the licence, Betfair will pay gross gaming revenue tax of 25 per cent on its Spanish operations – a tax the company has been paying since May last year when the country’s new gambling act was introduced.

Last month, Betfair confirmed that the Spanish tax authority had required online operators with customers in Spain to file tax returns and make a payment in respect of operations between January 2009 and May 2011. Betfair said it would be making a payment of not more than €10m.

Betfair joins several other major i-gaming companies in receiving licences for Spain, including Sportingbet and 888.
