It is due to open in December as part of an expansion of the venue. It will have a 72-foot screen with digital projectors and will seat 200 people. To be named the Al Thuraya Planetarium it will also carry the name Planetarium of the Astronomical Chandelier.

The planetarium will cover a total of 24,000 square feet and is part of a bigger, overall development initiative in the region, intended to boost tourist numbers. That initiative will also be helped by the opening of the Katara Hills, a project of gardens covering 361,500 square metres. Also at Katara a luxury shopping centre is being constructed to be named the Katara Plaza.
