Those hoping that the derelict Birnbeck Pier at Weston-super-Mare, UK, may be rejuvenated and back in action were shocked last week at the news that the main financier, the RNLI, has withdrawn support.
A statement from the lifeboat organisation showed that it is concerned about the management and funding of the Birnbeck project by the local council.
The use of its funds - mostly derived from charitable donations - for the project has become an issue, say locals. Meanwhile the RNLI lifeboat operations in Weston-super-Mare will continue to use the temporary headquarters at Marine Lake.
