The company is joining other mega-technology outlets in a key development for the next generation of the Internet.

The metaverse is an online world where people can game, work and communicate in a virtual environment, often using VR headsets.

Disney has appointed a top executive, Mike White, to head up an elite team to direct its strategy for the metaverse.

Disney joins Meta (Facebook) and Microsoft in devoting billions of dollars to the development of the new entertainment form.

Facebook, that became Meta Platforms last year, has already gone on record as saying that it will spend more than US$10bn to develop VR software and hardware; and Microsoft is adding 3D virtual avatars and environments to its Teams chat system, en route to the new metaverse.
