Thailand's government is under pressure to crack down on illegal casino operations, while at the same time allegedly being urged to consider permitting a major new gaming facility in the country.
According to local media reports, rumours that the Government Lottery Office had put forward proposals for setting up a casino to the previous Thaksin Shinawatra government have been circulating for some time.
However, new Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra denied that the government was actively exploring the possibility of legalising a casino.
Rak Thailand party leader Chuvit Kamolvisit, meanwhile, has threatened to reveal details of a large, recently built casino in Bangkok.
Having criticised how the police have addressed illegal gambling, the Bangkok Post reports that Kamolvisit is planning to publicly name and shame other illegal casinos throughout the city to highlight the problem.
