A plan for a second casino in the US state of Maryland has cleared its first legal hurdle despite a plea from the supporters of the recently opened Maryland Live! casino.

“This additional site will be a boa constrictor that will squeeze the life out of Maryland Live!,” Anne Arundel County executive John Leopold told a state Senate panel. With the panel’s 11 to one vote the legislation goes to the Senate, where it will be debated - and likely passed – tomorrow. A battle will then ensue in the House of Delegates, where similar legislation failed recently.
