Across England, Scotland and Wales, the year to August 2012 saw the drop - the amount of money exchanged for chips in casinos - increase to nearly £5.9bn from just under £5.2bn in the year prior; a rise of more than 13 per cent.

The house win - the amount retained by the casino - rose from £687m to in excess of £800m; an increase of 16.4 per cent.

The house win percentage was lowest for London’s high-end casinos (Crockfords, Aspinalls, Clermont, The Ritz, Les Ambassadeurs and Maxims), at 10.1 per cent. It was highest in Scotland with an average house win of 16.3 per cent.

The south of England (excluding London) was the only region to see a fall in win percentage, down 0.2 per cent to 15.7 per cent. London continues to lead the overall totals, with customers in the capital’s 25 casinos contributing around two-thirds of the total drop for Britain, approximately double that deposited by the 120 casinos in the regions.
