Up to last night, the 12 casinos in Atlantic City’s hurricane-battered Boardwalk, were still not open and the $5m a day that experts reckon they are losing by not opening, will add to the ongoing financial woes of the resorts.

Hurricane Sandy swept ashore at Atlantic City on Sunday but the casinos, along with many of the businesses in the city, were already closed by order of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. They cannot reopen until he lifts his evacuation order.

The situation is also not helpful to the casinos’ workers, none of whom can claim unemployment benefit and it seems that they will not be paid by the casinos either. The casinos themselves are in a precarious situation with a revenue slump caused by competition from casinos in neighbouring states and the sluggish economy.
