A study into the links between young people in the Netherlands and problem gambling is one of six that has been commissioned by research body ZonMw on behalf of the country’s regulator.

The six projects, which form part of regulator Kansspelautoriteit’s Prevention of Addiction research program, must start no later than February next year.

As well as the study into young people and the gateways to problem gambling, which is being carried out by the Amsterdam University Medical Centers, the University of Amsterdam has been tasked with researching the effects of gambling marketing and advertising on vulnerable groups.

The projects are being funded through the Addiction Prevention Fund which the KSA raises money for through an additional levy on operator revenues.

The first batch of projects combine to form the Breakthrough Round of research in the Prevention of Addiction research program. The program runs until 2029.

Elsewhere in the package of projects, the Trimbos Institute will investigate the development of indicators to support the assessment of gambling harms.

IVO, meanwhile, will look to aid professionals to create guidelines to identify and support at-risk problem gamblers.

The Trimbos Institute has also been commissioned to investigate the effectiveness of the Moti-4 platform for gambling problems in young people.

The platform allows users to track their time spent gaming and can also track and advise on cannabis and alcohol consumption trends.
