Following criticism of federal gaming law by the European Commission, the German state of Schleswig-Holstein will not hold a decisive vote on rejoining the German Interstate Treaty on Gambling until next year.

Schleswig-Holstein lawmakers missed the opportunity to hold a second reading on their new bill after the EC expressed serious concern that German gaming laws did not comply with EU rules. The earliest a vote on the Gambling Act can now take place will be January 7, 2013.
As the new federal legislation has been developing, Schleswig-Holstein has continued to issue sports betting licences under its existing law amid threats of legal action from disgruntled licensees. Schleswig-Holstein remains the last of the 16 states to sign up to the treaty.
