Republican senator and presidential candidate Lindsey Graham has introduced legislation to Congress that would make online gambling illegal in the US.

The legislation, known as RAWA - the Restoration of America’s Wire Act - would see the closure of online gaming activities in Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware; the only states in the US to have legalised internet gambling in some form.

Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, known as one of the biggest funders of Republican campaigns, has often spoken out against online gaming and is supporting the ban.

According to the National Journal, John Ashbrook, a spokesman for the Adelson-funded Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling, said: "Predatory online gambling is ruining lives all across our country and this bill will help us stop it.”

This news comes after Ronald Perelman, the chairman and largest shareholder of Scientific Games, gave Graham’s presidential campaign his backing.
