More than 1,000 gambling websites that fail to meet strict regulatory standards will be banned from advertising in the UK following a government crackdown.

New powers will be used to ban gambling adverts from companies operating outside the European Economic Area once the Gambling Act comes into force from September 1, 2007.

There is thought to be around 2,300 gambling websites worldwide, with Antigua holding the largest portion.

Jurisdictions that wished to be exempt had to pass a stringent assessment of their regulatory standards and applications from Alexander, Netherlands Antilles and Tasmania have been rejected.
