The Malta Gaming Authority has reflected on the country’s work across all sectors in the first half of 2022, reporting that just over €386,567 in penalties relating to enforcement measures was handed out during the period.

The MGA reported that, in conjunction with Malta’s Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit, the figure related to action against four licensees and covered written reprimands and administrative measures, with an emphasis on remediation measures.

The MGA also issued a total of seven administrative penalties as well as two regulatory settlements, totalling €85,000 in financial penalties.

Elsewhere, 16 compliance audits were conducted, together with 114 desktop reviews and seven anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing compliance examinations initiated by the MGA on behalf of the FIAU.

A total of 626 criminal probity screening checks were undertaken on personnel, shareholders, ultimate beneficial owners, key individuals, employees and businesses from the land-based and online gambling sectors between January and June 2022.

The MGA added that it issued six letters of breach, from which five operators were found to have violated the Commercial Communications Regulations.
