Spain has published a ministerial order for the application of general licences for online gaming and betting.

The call for licences is the third issued since online gaming was regulated in 2011 and will run from December 17, 2017 to December 16, 2018.

The online gambling and betting market in Spain is continuing to grow, according to the DGOJ (Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling). In the third quarter of 2017, it reached a 16.6 per cent increase in gross gaming revenues in the quarter, €140m in the period, despite a three per cent fall in advertising spend year-on-year. Sports betting accounted for 54.8 per cent of the GGR, increasing by 37 per cent compared with the same quarter of 2016.

Sports betting revenues stood at €77m and from casino games 54.2 per cent up at €43.9m. Slots were the greatest component of the casino games sector contributing €22.3m or 50.9 per cent to the general revenue with roulette second at €9.1m. But poker also showed signs of improvement, reaching €14.7m, 6.8 per cent up on the equivalent quarter.
