Google has banned adverts for speculative financial products including cryptocurrencies, foreign exchange markets and contracts for difference (CFDs) as it deals with “new threats”.

In a blog posting, Google’s director of sustainable ads Scott Spencer stated that the web giant has updated its gambling ad policies which will also cover so-called “skins betting”.

“We updated several policies to address ads in unregulated or speculative financial products like binary options, cryptocurrency, foreign exchange markets and contracts for difference (or CFDs),” Spencer stated.

“We also updated our gambling ads policies to address new methods of gambling with items that have real-world value (e.g., skins gambling). And we will introduce a new certification process for rehabilitation facilities, allowing legitimate addiction treatment centres to connect with people in need.”

The move follows on from a similar step taken by Facebook, which banned crypto and ICO ads earlier this year.
