Gemeinsamen Glücksspielbehörde der Länder says its management of the German gambling industry in the first half of 2023 has been “successful.”

GGL board member, Ronald Benter, added in its latest report that the regulator will “continue along the path of consistent legal enforcement in the issuing of permits and supervision.”

The GGL has handed out significant enforcement action in recent weeks, including revoking a sports betting licence for Tipster in June.

Its report, covering 2022 and the first half of 2023, says more than 2,000 websites were checked for illegal gambling or advertising illegal offers.

The GGL adds that the 2022 market had a total value of €13.4bn, “roughly the same as in 2019” before the coronavirus pandemic hit.

The providers GGL manages accounted for €3.5bn of the figure, of which sports betting brought in €1.4bn. The GGL says it expects the market to “stabilise at this level for the time being.”

Elsewhere, the regulator revealed the introduction of a “GGL seal of approval” to further tackle the illegal market in Germany. The seal will be available for legal providers to show on their homepages.
