One hundred and forty staff at gaming company Genesis Global in Malta have been laid off as the company closed down its office just prior to Christmas.

Genesis has permanently closed its operations in the island as it has filed for insolvency. Staff had been told that Genesis was facing "serious financial difficulties."

Company CEO Ariel Reem had said on social media that he had left the business a few weeks ago and, says the Times of Malta, more directors had resigned in recent weeks.

The company was hit with a £3.8m fine by the UK Gambling Commission earlier this year following an investigation that uncovered AML breaches. Genesis has other offices in Poland and Gibraltar.
