GBI Racing, which distributes British and Irish racing to betting outlets around the world, has this week launched its coverage in Cyprus for the first time, following a deal with the Nicosia Race Club (NRC).

The GBI Racing service will initially be broadcast in 134 betting shops all year and bets placed will be co-mingled with the British and Irish Tote pools.

The agreement follows the Cypriot government’s new law, passed in July 2012, to allow the NRC the exclusive licence to take bets on all overseas racing in Cyprus.

The GBI Racing channel will be broadcast alongside Cyprus’s domestic racing, which is staged twice a week, plus action from South Africa.

Richard Brooke, chairman of GBI Racing, commented: “The international market place is becoming increasingly competitive so Cyprus’ recognition of British and Irish horseracing as a respected and reputable product - which delivers a consistent schedule of high-quality content - is another ringing endorsement.

“We launched on Monday and early indications show there is a strong appetite for GBI Racing and expectations are high that Cyprus will perform as one of our top five Tote customers worldwide. This comes as no surprise given the Cypriot customers’ knowledge and passion for our racing, which has been very evident since our first dealings with the NRC.”
