Gamesys has been hit with a £6m fine in the UK for social responsibility and anti-money laundering failures.

The Gambling Commission said the Bally's-owned operator did not always identify customers at risk of experiencing harms associated with gambling.

The regulator also said the failures, exposed during a compliance assessment in May 2022, meant some customers were able to evade the licensee’s AML triggers and thresholds.

Kay Roberts, executive director of operations at the Gambling Commission, said: “Our focus as a regulator is to ensure that operators are employing policies and procedures which make gambling fair, safe and crime-free.

“We take this responsibility extremely seriously and whenever we find failures in policies and procedures then the business can expect significant regulatory action.”

The regulator said Gamesys’ system of deposit limits “did not identify risks of harm quickly enough” for some customers, including one player who lost £17,482 within 34 days of opening an account.

The Gambling Commission said the company, which operates 16 sites in the UK, only interacted with one customer once they had lost £10,000 and that the responsible gaming interaction included “the recommendation of new games and promotions.”

As for the operator’s AML failings, the Gambling Commission said one customer was able to deposit £14,585 in a 28-week period, while another deposited £34,280 in five and a half months.

The breaches occurred between November 2021 and July 2022, the regulator said.
