Registered charity GamCare has published a statement following an article in Sunday's Observer in which it claimed one of its counsellors was misquoted.

The article featured the case study of a female gambling addict and quotes GamCare counsellor Liz Karter as saying: "I think there is a great demonic force out there leading women quite deliberately into trouble."

However GamCare has issued a statement that reads: "GamCare is dismayed that this article on the serious issue of problem gambling among women completely misquoted our counsellor, Liz Karter, and so misrepresented GamCare’s position. What Liz Karter said was that she certainly did not believe that the industry is a ‘demonic force.’ GamCare is supported by and works closely with the online industry to improve player protection measures and there are many excellent examples of responsible gambling operators. What GamCare counsellors do is explore with each client the motivation behind their gambling behaviour in order to better understand it and to effect long-term recovery."

The charity is seeking to have this published in the Observer on Sunday.
