Following approval of the new Belgian Gaming Act last week, the Belgian National Lottery has begun a trial of online gaming.
However, the European Gaming and Betting Association has voiced public concern about the Belgian internet casino rules being a violation of the EU Treaty.
Among the issues that have been identified are the requirement for online operators to be established in Belgium; an unjustified limitation on the number of licences; a requirement to have servers located in Belgium; and the prohibition of residents playing at EU regulated online casinos.
If Belgium does not respond to any action taken, the Commission can begin an infringement procedure against the newly adopted legislation.
