Chinese police broke up a Shanghai-based gang in July, making more than 50 arrests and seizing $2bn following a three-month investigation.

The gang ran a website linked to overseas gambling sites which enabled Chinese users to play online card games and bet on a range of sports, including football matches in Europe.

Bets estimated to be worth more than $11bn (¥70m) were placed between January and July this year in what is believed to be China’s biggest such case to date.

Although casinos prosper in the special administrative region of Macau, gambling has been banned in China since 1949.
