The Amaya Gaming Group has secured the first online gaming licence issued by the government of the Dominican Republic.

The Canada-based company’s online gaming offering includes slot and table games, such as blackjack and roulette, as well as peer-to-peer games like online poker. The online site is due to be launched by the third quarter of this year.

"We are extremely pleased to have secured this licence to operate online gaming in the Dominican Republic," said David Baazov, president and chief executive officer of Amaya. "We believe our extensive gaming library and technological capabilities have been key deciding factors in securing this licence."

The Dominican Republic is the second largest Caribbean nation with an estimated population of 10 million.

"Based on our investigations and due diligence, we have decided to authorise Amaya with the only licence of its kind to operate online gaming in the country." Said Minister of Finance Conrado Abud. "As such, this is a sector of the gaming industry that is rapidly developing in an illegal way. Amaya was granted the licence to redirect this already existing but illegal gaming activity to a site that is secure, legal and trustworthy."
