A bill which promised sports betting alongside as many as 10 casinos in Alabama has been scaled back.

Montgomery, Alabama

As reported by the Alabama Daily News, an Alabama Senate Committee on Tuesday stripped the bill to keep only lottery and authorises the Governor to enter into a potential compact with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.

Speaking in the session, Sen. Randy Price, R-Opelika, the committee chair, said: “We’re losing millions of dollars every year that are going across the state line as far as lottery tickets.

“My district, it borders the state of Georgia, and I’ve heard from quite a few of my mayors that they’re losing a lot of revenue because when people go across that state line, not only do they buy groceries and do other things while they’re there, but what drove them across that state line? To buy that lottery ticket.”

The Alabama Daily News reported that a new vote on the Senate floor could take place on Thursday.
