Seventy-five per cent of people in Sweden have gambled for money in the past 12 months, according to a new survey.

The country’s Gambling Inspectorate’s annual industry survey said the figure translates to a “slightly higher percentage" compared to the previous measurement.

The latest survey, conducted at the end of November last year, also found that 41 per cent have gambled in the past week, an increase of three percentage points.

The most common form of gambling in Sweden is lottery and number games, with 74  per cent of players saying they have played such games.

And 69 per cent of all players think that gambling companies take responsibility for gambling problems, up “slightly” from the previous measurement.

Awareness of the Spelpaus self-exclusion scheme is also rising, the survey revealed, with 65 per cent knowing they can self-exclude with the tool.

For the Swedish industry, debate is still ongoing about plans to raise taxes on gambling from 18 per cent to 22 per cent from Julyl.
