The British Gambling Commission’s Tim Miller warns online operators that don’t meet its standards to expect more tough enforcement action in 2018

In the second half of 2017 the Gambling Commission for Great Britain took aim at online operators issuing millions in fines to high-profile operators 888 and Gala Interactive. Working with the Competition and Markets Authority and the Advertising Standards Authority, the Commission warned that that the industry had been too sluggish in meeting its standards on social responsibility and fairness.

Making it clear that there would be further enforcement activity to come in 2018, its chief executive Sarah Harrison warned that “we are at a tipping point and those that do not share this commitment, those who do not deliver for the consumer, will find themselves in an uncomfortable position, with their future in this industry increasingly in peril.”

These proved not to be empty words and in early 2018 the Commission revealed it had launched investigations into 17 online operators and was considering whether five of these require a licence review. Now iNTERGAMINGi asks the Gambling Commission’s executive director Tim Miller what changes are afoot in 2018 and whether the Commission’s current approach is set to change when Sarah Harrison steps down as chief executive in February 2018.
