An Italian court has overturned a €70m fine placed on video lottery terminal operators by regulator AAMS.

In 2005, AAMS stipulated that all VLTS were to be connected to a centralised network in order to reduce the risk of fraud and ensure an accurate account of taxes owed was kept. Several operators were fined for failing to comply with these monitoring regulations.
Operators argued, however, that they were unable to connect to the system due to technical problems.
Overturning the fine, the Court of Lazio Region found that the Italian government had failed to provide evidence that there had been any economic damage as a result of these technical issues.
