The UK government will support the location of a major new Universal theme park in Bedfordshire, according to a range of media reports from insiders, backed by comments from the top.

The 480-acre attraction has nevertheless set off concerns among locals who worry about thousandes of visitors coming to the small village of Stewartby which has a population of just over 1,100.

While Universal has gone on record as admitting that it has plans for the park, they are still at an early stage, but parent Comcast has bought the plot of land in the village.

UK government transport secretary Mark Harper said that both he and the Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, had examined the plans.

He said that they would "look carefully" at the plans, but added: “I know the government will want to do what we can to make sure that this exciting proposal comes to fruition.”

The plan is also backed by the local Labour MP, Mohammed Yasin, but locals quoted in the media are worried about increased traffic.
