SPORT is one of the great unifiers; many who don’t religiously follow football still tune in for the World Cup every four years.

Programmed television is in trouble at the moment, as people can watch whatever they like on streaming services whenever they like, but sport is different. As any fan will tell you, if you’re going to watch sport you need to watch it live. Recording a game and watching it later just isn’t the same; there’s an immediacy and a public camaraderie in sport that is more difficult to find in the digital age.
