Chart-based music drove over 80 per cent of jukebox income in 2012, according to Soundnet, a company that supplies music to over 15,000 Sound Leisure jukeboxes.

Carly Rae Jepson’s Call Me Maybe was the top-played song, followed by Goyte’s Somebody That I Used to Know and David Guetta’s Titanium. International hit Gangnam Style was eighth on the list.

Soundnet said its close relationship with record labels enables the firm to supply more new chart tracks before commercial release than its competitors.

“We understand that the sooner the latest tracks are on the jukebox, the more money it will take,” said company spokesperson Toby Hoyte. “With Soundnet online jukeboxes, updates are twice a week. By getting music direct from source, we maximise profit potential. For instance, we were able to supply Titanium, the third most-played song, four months ahead of its commercial release. This superior service has been one of the key reasons for the success of Soundnet powered jukeboxes.”

Soundnet compiled the chart data to show the most played tracks and most popular artists and search genres. The top artist category showed Oasis came out on top, followed by Rihanna and Flo Rida. The Beatles and Elvis were also in the top five. In the back catalogue chart, The Gambler by Kenny Rogers overtook Sweet Child ‘o Mine by Guns ‘n’ Roses for the first time as the most player classic track.

“The fact that Oasis comes out on top despite the most popular tracks being all new releases demonstrates that it is very important to offer a good back catalogue,” continued Hoyte. “Many of the most played Oasis songs were never singles, some weren’t even on standard albums - this shows how important it is to supply individual handpicked tracks - not just album after album. With Oasis being one of the archetypal 'lads bands' it also suggests that jukeboxes work well in wet led sites.”

The artists to watch out for in 2013, he said, are Biffy Clyro, Azealia Banks, Tom Odell, Bon Jovi and Lady Gaga.
