A space shuttle-simulated ride known as Space Journey, has killed six people and injured 10 at a popular theme park in southern China.

Chinese media reported that the accident occurred on Tuesday, June 29, at the Overseas Chinese Town East theme park in Shenzhen city, in the southern province of Guangdong.

The simulator ride, which simulates the 2G acceleration effect of gravity from a rocket launch, features 12 cabins that rise and spin and can hold four passengers each. One of these cabins became loose, colliding with other cabins, while spinning at high speed. Some of the cabins were said to drop 15m while ejecting passengers.

According to Yangcheng Evening News, only one out of the 12 simulation chambers remained intact after the accident, which was said to be caused by a power shortage. The incident is now being investigated by the Shenzhen government.

OCT East operates under the OCT Group, one of China’s largest theme park developers.
