A busy and upbeat FER Interazar trade show closed yesterday in Madrid amid talk of server-based gaming as the possible theme and potential new technological industry aid.

In fact the most fuss appeared to have been over the Smart Coin System introduced by Britain’s Innovative Technologies, which was shown on the Unidesa booth and attracted crowds of observers. The new coin-feed system in gaming machines cut to a fraction the time taken by operators’ staff in restocking money into machines using a closed loop system.

FER had a smaller footprint, which assisted the impression of crowds, but nevertheless it was certainly blessed with a more hopeful ambience as Spain has reportedly emerged from the worst of the recession. All of the big companies were on hand, Gauselmann Group from Germany, Novomatic from Austria, local leaders R Franco and Cirsa with its Unidesa brand, automated bingo principals Zitro, Ortiz and Metronia, major distributors Sente and Comatel and casino industry leader Aristocrat with street market product.

It may not signal the "bottoming out" of the Spanish market, but FER Interazar this year shows at least that the business in Spain is close to modest resurgence. A full report will be included in the May issue of InterGame.
